spring Garden terrace
The designers at Hammock by Thornbloom recommended a lovely dining suite with brown table, wicker-look chairs and a soft blue-green umbrella that mirrored the glass railing enclosure.
Floor to ceiling glass walls allowed for an expansive view of the terrace and skyline from inside the suite. Inside, Melanie Orr of Interiors by Melanie had used the same soft hue in the living area furnishings.
We loved the consistent and subtle use of blue-green and neutral shades and recommended classic matte-white containers for the garden. Clean and bright, these planters offer flexibility for a range of four-season planting designs over time.
Textured foliage creates a dramatic entrance to the terrace dining area. Exotic bird of paradise, gardenia, kangaroo paw with fuzzy pink blooms, lime and dark green moss, variegated vinca and lime toned potato vine are repeated in the key focal planters.
The impressive scale of the bird of paradise plants and chartreuse-lime hues were chosen for two central 4-foot long containers that were visible from the entrance into the suite, the interior dining area and upon entering the terrace.
The tropical theme continues in this container with some repeated elements and the introduction of fan palms and exotic blooming plants with interesting foliage.
Smaller corner planters in the eating area create a beautiful dining atmosphere while allowing easy access around the table.
Kangaroo paw in pink and yellow provide vertical interest with repeated potato vine and moss providing continuity across the terrace garden.
The view from the kitchen island was a focal point to be considered in the placement of planters. The four-foot tropical planters were centered along the outer glass enclosure. The glass wall beside the kitchen table was the perfect location for installing planters with edible and ornamental herbs for cooking and inspiration.
A pair of kitchen garden containers are placed within view of the indoor eating area. Planted with edible and ornamental herbs including basil, thyme, mint, oregano and fragrant lavender, they are in easy reach of the kitchen prep area.
Hammock by Thornbloom supplied matching wicker-influenced sofa, chairs, side table, shade umbrella placed around a center table with fire pit insert.
The left end of the terrace was selected for the placement of two four-foot long planters.
Two four-foot long planters filled with plants are the perfect back drop to the conversation area. Repeated mosses, trailing vines and kangaroo paw provide continuity while pink blooming oleander adds fresh color and atmosphere to this end of the terrace. By summers end, the oleander had grown to an impressive 3 feet in height.
A total of nine fiberglass containers in three sizes were specified for this project. Holes were drilled in the bottom of each planter before installing 4 inches of grade A gravel for drainage.
Container gardens use soil-less potting mix to ensure proper drainage. High-quality mixes include peat moss, peat humus, compost, perlite, gypsum, limestone and organic fertilizer. Joscelyn is dwarfed by the trailer load of potting mix bales required for this project.
Location: Spring Garden Road, Halifax
Client Goals: Summer Terrace Garden
This client was thrilled to have secured a suite with a spectacular view in one of Halifax’s newest residential buildings.
The south-facing 50 foot long garden terrace is the perfect setting for entertaining, watching Spring Garden Road parades and regattas on the waterfront, and enjoying sunsets.
The client asked that the focus be on foliage and texture rather than color. Newly enrolled in cooking class, he asked that we include a “potager” kitchen herb garden in the design.
A crew of 5 installed nine fiberglass commercial-grade containers, 20 bales of potting soil, 1/4 cubic yard of stone and more than 150 plants in one day.
The client was delighted with the outcome. Not only did he enjoy learning how to care for his garden terrace but he was thrilled that hummingbirds and bees found their way to his urban setting.
Social media posts of this terrace garden landscape were among our most popular in 2019.
