THE SHE SHED was asked to draw inspiration from the client’s travels throughout Scotland in a garden makeover. The request was perfect for our garden designer Amy who has traveled Scotland numerous times (her father hails from Glasgow). Amy loves Scotland’s countryside, castles and manors, craggy cliffs, Scotch thistle, heath and woodlands.
The scope of the project included the garden bed to the right of the driveway and a stand of trees (and debris) on the upper left of the driveway.
A commercial disposal container was filled three times to remove dead trees, debris and rock, including beach stone had been installed as an unsuccessful attempt to create a weed barrier. Beach stone was out of place with the style of the home and garden. We removed it and replaced with natural mulch for a clean look and for its soil building qualities.
The large size of the home and rock wall called for plants that would have presence in terms of size and color. We retained mature evergreen shrubs and groundcovers and larger stands of bright pink dianthus. The silver grey-green foliage of these plants were stunning against the stone backdrop making them themes to repeat in new plantings. The color palette included green-grey foliage, pink, purple and white using mixed evergreen and deciduous trees, shrubs and perennials in a four season garden.
Towering Blue Arrow juniper, carpet rose, hydrangea, heath, cotoneaster, flag iris and variegated weigela were planted. While not in bloom when the garden was planted, we included cyni broom and purple globe thistle for a distinctly Scottish influence.
THE SHE SHED crew completed this project in 4 days. It included the installation of soaker hoses to reduce maintenance while ensuring the garden is well watered as it becomes established.
This property is one we like to drive so we can watch this garden grow.
